Northern Cardinal with Feather Loss

I don’t know if this cardinal is undergoing a normal (extreme) molt, or if he has some kind of medical condition. Whatever the cause, this kind of feather loss seems to be common.

Hi Rae–please forgive me not commenting much this week (and perhaps next). I am editing my novel for publication and am pressed for time. But I wanted you to know that I am ‘around’ and enjoying your posts as much as ever!

Good luck with your editing and congratulations on your novel! I look forward to reading it!

Yep, cardinals and blue jays tend to lose all their head feathers at once, making them look rather…odd (sorry, I just can’t call any bird ugly!). Not to worry, they will soon grow back.
